Perfect balmy weather characterised the day and made
this somewhat difficult walk a very pleasant one for the 65 or so ramblers
who turned up at Torri l-Ahmar. Lino Bugeja was on cue to give a few
historical notes on the tower and then we were off taking the road
westwards towards Rdum il-Qawwi. This road offers some fantastic views
southwards taking in most of the rugged western coast and its various
inlets. Just before the end of the road we veered northwards on a track
which crosses the plateau known as Id-Dahar ( literally the Back ).

It was then down through a small opening in the cliff
face where a path continues almost unbroken through some abandoned fields
and clay slopes to the remote rocky beach at Il-Qammieh. Here we stopped
to catch our collective breath and take it all in - majestic sea and large
boulders beneath a sheer clay cliff.

Continuing on, we made our way over a small area of loose boulders and
descended the clay slope to reach the shore again. From here it was
relatively easy walking along the limestone shelf which borders the sea on
this southern part of the Qammieh promontory. Then it was uphill through
mostly fallow fields all the way until the road back to the tower was once
again reached.

after a well deserved break
All in all a great time in good time - three hours.
